Introduce yourself, What’s your name, where are from where, do you live etc?
I am Gareth Douglas and originally from London where I completed my training as a hair cutting specialist. I moved to Australia in 2005 and for the last 9 years I have owned and managed INCH HAIRDRESSING in Paddington Queensland.
How long have you been a hairdresser, tell us a bit about your experience?
I have been hairdressing for 22 years
When did you realise you wanted to specialise in curly hair/how did you get into cutting curls?
Although I have been trained to cut and style all hair types I have gained a reputation as a ‘curly hair specialist’ through my curly clients recommending other curly clients and also recommending me on various forums and blogs. It was at this stage that I started to get a large volume of curly clients and realised how many hairdressers couldn’t/wouldn’t cut curly hair correctly or give good hair and product knowledge.
What do you love about cutting/styling curly hair specifically?
I love cutting curly hair, especially new clients, as they have had such terrible haircuts and advice in the past that I am 100/% confident I can make their hair look amazing and give them the correct advice to keep it looking amazing in between salon visits at home.
Tell us a bit about your salon and what people can expect when they visit?
The first visit to the salon for a new client is about gaining the clients trust and confidence – a lot of curly clients have lost faith in hairdressers after numerous hair disasters in the past. It is also about assessing the hair and the curl type and offering solutions to make that hair the best it can be through recommendations of styles to suit the curl type, conditioning the curls and advice on washing, styling and drying the hair. I have built a large loyal curly clientele based on giving curly clients confidence in their curls.
What your 3 biggest tips for people with curly hair?
My 3 biggest tips are
- Stop shampooing your hair. At most (if at all) you should only use a clarifying shampoo every 4-6 weeks
- Use products in wet hair and comb the products from root to ends
- Ask your hairdresser to never never never use thinning scissors or razors when cutting curly hair
